In the review that follows, I’ve included a suggestion from a reviewer who commented on my Amazon First review of “The Tenth Island.” My shout out goes to R. Baer, for her suggestion to include subheadings for ‘ADVENTURE’ and ‘SOUL.’ I thank her and others among you for advising me on my quest to become a better reviewer.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder series might have folks longing for the good old days when, it seems, life was simpler and folks were more neighborly and honest, compared to the gun violence and rage we witness daily these days.

Well, “Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie,” is a truthful reminder that shows us otherwise. Sort of the yang to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ying?

I loved the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, so I decided to take this Kindle Short, including the free Audible edition.

I was immediately hooked, despite the short, choppy chapters.

There are some black and white photographs that haunt one. Not because of gore, but for the thought that, even as Laura was etching her delightful memories into her memory, so creepy family, which she and her pa interacted with on two occasions, was committing horrific, grotesque mayhem on the folks visiting their tavern. Remember, this was occurring in the 1870s.

THE WRITING

STYLE, FLOW, EDITING Terse, choppy, sometimes too abbreviated is my take. However, others will see it as not a word wasted.

BLUSH FACTOR - Language and content.

In terms of profanities: No worries. In terms of frank talk of sex, well, no worries. The discussion of violence is told in a way that also should raise no red flags.

ADVENTURE

Although it definitely ties into an element of adventure, an expansion of this tale to explore this aspect would be welcome.

SOUL

This could be better described as a story of a family absent of soul. Getting deeper into the examination aspect might also improve the telling of this true crime story.

EXCERPT

‘...Like her mother, Katie would be the subject of various dark rumors: not only that she was a witch who had sworn unspeakable oaths to Satan but, even more scandalously, that she and her brother John Jr.—both products of Mrs. Bender’s previous marriage—indulged in unnatural relations. “They slept together just like they wasn’t no kin,” one neighbor asserted. “They didn’t care who knowed [sic] it, either, and whenever she had a baby, they would just knock it in the head.” It is impossible to verify the truth of this shocking allegation, though, as one historian notes, “incest was not uncommon on the border in pioneer days.”[ 18]

Katie’s professional activities did nothing to discourage the popular belief in her occult powers. Identifying herself as “Professor Miss Katie Bender,” she distributed printed handbills throughout the region, trumpeting her ability to “cure Blindness, Fits, Deafness, and all such Diseases.” She was also a practicing medium who conducted séances, told fortunes, sold good luck charms and love potions, and delivered lectures throughout the countryside on spiritualism. “She had a great desire for...’

BOTTOM LINE

I find it nearly impossible to criticize a Kindle Short that was so grabbing, and so stimulating, so I’m going to rate it higher than one might expect. Certainly, it is worth the $1.99, but a full-length story, even if it was to became somewhat fictionalized, with such a warning as, “This is a fictionalized story based, loosely, on fact,” much as is often done with films and television movies.

Four stars out of five.

Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie Bloodlands collection eBook Harold Schechter Reviews

Really enjoying this series. I had a difficult time putting this one down. They are in no way in depth but do give one a chance to dip their toes in the water.
This was a quick and interesting book to read. I love this author! It fun to read about other things that happened on that prairie.
Although short, interesting, historic perspective.
A short, easy to read, historical non-fiction book that revealed the dark side of the Kansas frontier.
As a fan of the classic Little House books and T.V. Series, but also a fan of history who knows all too well that there were no "good old days" , I recommend this for folks with a strong stomach.
Very entertaining story about true events. Perfect length to kill some time and enjoy yourself between other tasks or events.
Easy read that is hard to put down, but not an issue due to its novella length
Only negative was that the villains were never positively found and brought to justice, but that is not the author's fault
I’m not usually a fan of this genre but a review I read intrigued me. I’m so glad I tried it. It was written in a way that was informative without being as gruesome as I thought it may be. Although the crimes were horrific, I appreciate the historical and factual points that were given. For anyone looking for a good historical read that seemed highly researched, I’d definitely recommend this book. Fans of the genre should be quite impressed as well.
