Dark of the West was a fantastically full-figured fantasy steeped with intrigue, adventure, and a subtle touch of romance. This brilliantly written debut had a delicious slow burn that took its time developing every character and the tendrils that connected each to their nations and to one another. The intricacies involved in creating a story this rich were vast, but its readability for how detailed it was rivaled many of its kind, and I could not put it down upon starting.

Hathaway adeptly crafted a character-driven novel and kept it that way, in no rush to force connections that would have felt weak had they been introduced sooner. The danger of the court—of every player having a personal agenda—played through the entire story, twisting and arcing around every character and creating this thick tension that stayed with me until the last page. The voices of Athan and Aurelia were sound, developed so well they were effortless to fall into and become one with. While I adored them both, Athan spoke to me the most and I can’t get over how brilliantly he was penned—to feel as meek as he should’ve been, but full of a self-conviction that rivaled it. The sweet connection between the two felt like the truest thing either had ever experienced, and was the fire that sparked Athan and Aurelia into finding who they were meant to be.

The lushness to its plot and character development made Dark of the West the beauty that it was, and I’m eager for what’s to become of our beloved characters in the game of power surrounding them—the foreshadowing in the prologue made even better when reread after turning the final page. This fantasy re-imagining of WWII left me spellbound and is an absolute must-read.

I honestly don't even know where to start.

When I requested the ARC of this book, I was drawn by the cover and blurb. But what kept me glued to it - and glaring at tourists at work when they interrupted my reading - was the story itself.

Love and war. Love is complicated, as it is, but during war times? And especially when the heroine is a Princess and the hero a Lieutenant, both fighting on the opposite sides?

It's way past complicated, it's heartbreaking.

The prologue was sad but, throughout the story, we have some happy scenes too. The Princess, Aurelia meeting Athan for the first time; the cocky way he spoke to her for the first time, her not understanding him and taking offense.

The thing is, I don't want to spoil this amazing book for anyone. I'm beyond grateful for reading it sooner because it's on my favorite of 2018 list. The writing is so good, pulls you right in. The characters - each and every one of them - are well-developed.

There's court intrigue and murders and showing off with planes, masquerade balls and shooting. You must add this book to your shelf, you must buy it and read it. The many feels it gave me... And oh, the ending! I was both gutted and happy to learn it's a trilogy! Gutted because I have to wait - boo - but happy because I get more of Aurelia and Athan! Though there shall be more heartbreak before the HEA, I just know!

I LOVED this book and am now obsessed with this world. A fantasy world at war inspired by World War II-era Europe? It is just as beautiful and bittersweet as it sounds.

Some books move so slowly you feel as though your soul is being sucked away. Other books move at a steady progression, building and building, while you know a sudden crescendo will bring it all crashing down. This is the latter and it’s still building.

The MOMENT I finished I went back to read the Prologue straight away and it just hit me SO. DAMN. HARD. Seriously, read the book and then read the prologue again. Good luck keeping those tears at bay. I knew it likely took place later in Aurelia and Athan’s story, but it doesn’t take place at the end of this book and we are still learning about these two, their relationship and what will bring them to that point in the prologue. There is still so much to come.

And let me just say, this book is written and plotted fantastically. Ingeniously. The characters have a well of depth, much of it still to be discovered. Hathaway paints these characters well. They are young. They are impressionable. They want to be heard and want to please. They are teenagers. They are realistic.

As I was reading, I couldn’t help but think of movies like Atonement – and I just have this sickening feeling we are headed down a very similar path, but I also can’t look away. I know this story is gritty and the world Hathaway has written is sweeping and golden in its detail. I know there are dark things to come and things are only just beginning but I have to know. I have to know these two will eventually get their mountain.

This is a story about the desperation of war and love and finding your voice. THIS is the type of story that will stick with you. THIS is the type of story that should be written and I’m so very grateful it was.

What a fantastic read! A story of young, star-crossed lovers coming into their own in the midst of a world about to ignite into war, this book grabbed me and did not let me go. Deception, changing alliances, rebellion, and betrayal all come together as part of a vast and deadly game in which casualties don't only occur on battlefields. Reveals keep the stakes rising, and the plotting of the commanders and the nobles—as well as the two young protagonists I rooted hard for—is only matched by that of the author herself as she brilliantly creates this world. Can’t wait for the sequel. Recommended for fans of The Winner’s Curse.
